Applications Engineer

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for an Applications Engineer to support application development for ActiveCopper, MacDermid Alpha's next-generation copper paste and sintering platform. Based at the MacDermid Alpha site in Wilmington DE, you will execute experiments supporting the full development of the paste deposition process to yield optimal filling and zero defects under standardized sinter conditions across basic test boards, internal functional boards, and customer boards. You will play a key role in improving the process, the equipment configuration as well as evaluating alternative printing and dispensing machines.

This role works with increasing independence under the guidance of the Sr. R&D Applications Engineer, contributing to the technical path for ActiveCopper application development while building toward subject matter expertise in the paste deposition and sinter process.

What will you be doing?

• Process Development Execution: Execute studies supporting full development of the paste deposition process with standardized sinter parameters, using advanced printing, vacuum-assisted deposition, and laser stencil cutting equipment.
• Experimental Design Support: Help define technical paths for assigned projects, applying Design of Experiments principles under the guidance of the Sr. R&D Applications Engineer.
• Testing and Evaluation: Perform simple to multifactor DOE evaluations of ActiveCopper paste and sinter processes to validate performance on basic test boards, internal functional boards, and customer boards.
• Data Analysis and Reporting: Analyze performance data, interpret results, and prepare technical reports and project summaries for internal and customer audiences.
• Metrology Support: Utilize cross-section, optical microscopy, SEM, AOI, and X-ray tools to characterize deposit morphology, sinter quality, and process consistency.
• Cross-Functional Coordination: Work with R&D Innovation, Application Qualification, and metrology teams to troubleshoot paste deficiencies and process issues affecting ActiveCopper applications.
• Documentation: Develop application guidelines, technical documentation, and best practices to support internal teams and customer qualification efforts.
• Customer Trial Support: Support on-site or lab-based customer trials, helping ensure successful implementation and qualification of Active Copper solutions.

Who are You?

What competencies will you need?

• MS with 3+ years of relevant experience, or BS with 5+ years of relevant technical experience in electronics manufacturing, chemistry, or materials science. Likely education background: Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Working knowledge of printing, dispensing, sintering, or plating equipment; experience with vacuum-assisted printing or PCB sinter press processes a plus.
• Strong technical acumen and application knowledge, and ability to put ideas into action related to problem solving. Possess a growth mindset to determine cause and effect relationships.
• Ability to design experiments and interpret results with increasing independence; familiarity with DOE preferred.
• Develop an understanding of how customers use MAES products and the value proposition of Active Copper applications.
• Effective communicator, able to present project summaries to internal audiences and customers and contribute to technical reports.
• Prioritizes safety of self and team and actively contributes to a culture of safety.

As part of our team here, as well as receiving a competitive base salary, you will also participate in a generous performance related bonus plan. The salary range for this role is  expected to be between $81,470 and $122,206 depending on experience and education. In addition, you will also receive a 401k plan with company matching, Life Insurance, and Medical Insurance as well as 9 holidays.
