Who are we looking for?

We are a leading global manufacturer of specialty chemical products used throughout the semiconductor and electronics industries.

We are seeking a skilled and innovative Packaging Engineer to join our dynamic team at our West Haven, CT manufacturing location. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and improving packaging solutions for our products. This role requires a deep understanding of package design, materials, manufacturing processes, DOT Haz-Mat requirements, and sustainability practices. The Packaging Engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure that our packaging meets both functional, shipping, and regulatory standards while also being cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

What will you be doing?

  • Create and develop packaging solutions for new and existing products.
  • Ensure packaging designs meet all Customers, regulatory, quality, and safety standards.
  • Conduct package testing and evaluation to ensure compliance with safety, quality, chemical compatibility and environmental standards and requirements.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate packaging materials based on product requirements and sustainability goals.
  • Work with Process Engineering to develop and refine manufacturing processes to optimize packaging production.
  • Work with Procurement and suppliers to source alternate package designs and ensure quality and regulatory requirements are met.
  • Manage the MFD (internal change management) process for new or existing changes with packaging.
  • Conduct testing to ensure packaging durability, functionality, and compliance with industry standards.
  • Implement quality assurance procedures to monitor and improve packaging performance.
  • Manage DOT testing and package certification in accordance with 49CFR Haz-Mat requirements.
  • Maintain and update the DOT Haz-Mat Packaging Database for all certified primary and combination product packaging.
  • Analyze and manage packaging costs to ensure cost-effectiveness without compromising quality. Identify opportunities for cost savings through material optimization and process improvements.
  • Work with Corporate Supply chain, Procurement and local QA supply chain personnel to identify alternate sources for packaging as well as cost savings opportunities.
  • Develop and implement sustainable packaging initiatives to reduce environmental impact.
  • Stay updated on the latest trends and regulations in sustainable packaging.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for packaging-related issues during production and product distribution.
  • Work with Quality Assurance to help resolve packaging related customer complaints and issues.

Who are You?

  • Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in packaging engineering or a related role.
  • Proven experience with packaging design and development, preferably in a manufacturing and/or R&D environment.
  • Proficiency in CAD software and other design tools preferred.
  • Certification in Packaging Engineering or relevant safety certifications is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of packaging materials, including plastics, metals, and corrugated materials.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and sustainability practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of 8D problem solving methodology is a plus.
  • Knowledge of ISO9001 and IATF16949 Quality Management System requirements is a plus.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements for hazardous materials packaging (e.g., CFR Title 49, IMDG Code). Excellent project management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across different functions and levels within the organization.
  • This position may require occasional travel to suppliers and other manufacturing facilities.
  • Ability to lift and handle packaging materials and prototypes as needed.
