Job Purpose

The primary purpose of this position is to participate in chemical process design, pilot and plant scale-up and troubleshooting process problems. The position is part of the Global Process Engineering Group (GPEG) with the responsibility for effectively scaling-up new chemical processes, improving current chemical processes and products by optimizing throughput, and investigating opportunities for cost reduction, while maintaining or improving product quality. #LI-DM1

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Participate in design and implementation of manufacturing processes from the laboratory and concept stage through pilot plant and manufacturing scale-up
  • Conduct pilot scale experiments and tests needed to develop and/or improve production processes.
  • Perform validation of new and existing processes/equipment to improve yield, product performance and/or to introduce new materials.
  • Interfaces with various departments (R&D, Operations, Quality, Marketing) to ensure processes and designs are compatible for new product technology transfer 
  • Construct, edit and maintain Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID’s).
  • Develop specifications and test methods for new and existing production processes.
  • Test components of new processes in laboratory setting and design pilot projects for next step of small-scale testing.
  • Investigates and troubleshoots process problems
  • Monitor process capabilities and performance through standard statistical process control and analysis methods.
  • Improve manufacturing processes by performing comprehensive evaluation of processes, materials and equipment and identifying areas and methods of improvement
  • Participate in reducing process variability.
  • Responsible for exhibiting professional behavior with both internal/external business associates that reflects positively on the company and is consistent with the company’s policies and practices.
  • Utilizes process simulation software to work out the best production methods/equipment.
  • Maintain laboratory safety protocols
  • Perform other duties & projects as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

To successfully accomplish the essential duties of this job the incumbent of this position must possess a Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or Chemistry and have seven years to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Master’s degree preferred.

Additional Competencies

  • Experience in chemical process optimization and de-bottlenecking
  • Experience with chemical/material analysis techniques
  • Working knowledge of analytical chemistry and quality control process development
  • Experience in process engineering and scale-up is required.
  • The individual must be flexible, able to adapt to a fast-paced, dynamic work environment, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience with COMSOL software a plus.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Educated in Six Sigma/Lean techniques with Minitab/excel a plus
  • PLC programming a plus
  • Possesses well-developed communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. 
  • Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
  • Addresses inquiries and resolves problems by using appropriate resources/other departments to achieve results/answers.
  • Present a professional attitude and handle confidential information according to non-disclosure guidelines.
  • High ethical standards and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to speak read and write English. 
  • Demonstrated capacity to work with Microsoft Office Products, Lotus Notes, and other critical computer applications.
  • Must be able to travel both domestically and internationally up to 20% of working time
