Job Purpose

The Technical Specialist for Decorative Coatings and Plating on Plastics is a key role on the Product Line Management Team. You will support vast strategic goals and work integrally with a wide cross-functional group of both internal and external teams by leading technical product stewardship of our product portfolio. This role’s key functions are implementing product line strategy, leading technical expertise, and leading initiatives with OEMs on product portfolio.

Job Responsibilities

Implementing Product Line Strategy

  • Discover new opportunities and market research by building relationships throughout the Decorative Coatings and Plating on Plastics’ vast industry.
  • Develop core commercial, field service, OEM, and manufacturing team knowledge of the product portfolio.
  • Implement product line actions set by management such as product launches, maturing growth, and rationalization.
  • Market the product portfolio through trade shows, in person and remote meetings, product academies, online, and other settings.
  • Support market analytics, manufacturing efficiency, and product line strategy development programs.

Leading Technical Expertise

  • Perpetuate technical expertise through-out the field service, commercial, and manufacturing teams on product portfolio.
  • Collection and presentation of data important for the success of products.
  • Develop and implement, best practice guidelines for products. Conduct onsite and remote product academies, seminars, and trainings for product use, experience, and best practices guidelines.
  • Provide well-informing and actively engaged troubleshooting both onsite and remotely.
  • Assist in startups, new installations, general operation, and conversions of products onsite and remotely.

Additional Responsibilities

Leading Product Initiatives with OEMs (primarily automotive)

  • Advance product knowledge and grow the end use of products at OEMs in cooperation with our North American OEM team.
  • Expand the use of products by connecting OEM goals and product benefits by building knowledge of specifications & corporate goals.
  • Design, develop, test, and implement new finishes for OEMs at pilot lines, test labs, and customers.
  • Work as a technical liaison collecting and sharing OEM feedback and support into core business functions.

Other Notable Key Functions

  • Public speaking, presenting topics, and support at public shows, large or small internal and external meetings, and other events across regions.
  • Coordinating Marketing content with global and regional product line and marketing teams.
  • Discern and interpret color, gloss, and other physical attributes of Decorative Coatings visually.
  • Attend required training including safety, hazardous waste management, emergency response, hazard communication, and other required trainings, and demonstrate an acceptable level of understanding of topics.
  • Operate equipment and follow procedures in accordance with ISO 9000 and ISO 14001 standards.    
  • Travel Function- 75% +/- overall travel requirement for the above.
    • Primary region includes North America (USA, Canada, and Mexico) with occasional trips overseas. A key area in Midwest USA (Michigan and surrounding area). Occasional over weekend stays with extended or multi-city trips.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the industry, our company, our customers, competitors, and our product line(s) is a plus
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software; ability to generate documents and spreadsheets in Microsoft Word and Excel as required to support job function
  • Spanish language (writing and verbal) is a plus but not required with working internationally.
  • Basic to Mid-level understanding of Chemistry, Physics, and or Material Engineering is a plus.
  • NASF/AESF Certified Electro Finisher (CEF) or higher is a plus but not required.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs repeatedly.

Education

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in Chemistry or Engineering
